When it comes to biodiesel, a lot of bad (and plain wrong) information tends to get thrown around leaving the public unsure as to whether biodiesel itself is indeed a good thing.

This article intends to dispel some of the myths and rumours and prove that biodiesel usage goes some way to saving money and indeed saving our planet.

Myth 1) You need an expensive engine mod to your diesel vehicle in order to run biodiesel. This is simply not true. Biodiesel will run in any diesel engine without any modification whatsoever.

Myth 2) Biodiesel will erode my engines gaskets and seal. Simply put, rubbish! The reason stories about biodiesel ruining engines ever came about is because some poor saps used biodiesel on regular gasoline engines and promptly ruined them.

Myth 3) Ethanol is better than biodiesel - no, it really isn t. The environmental advantages of using biodiesl are clear for all to see.

Myth 4) Biodiesel is far too expensive. Take a look at the local prices and see for yourself. Biodiesel costs around $3.00 per gallon. If you check out certain parts of America you ll see that regular gasoline can cost $3.50 and upwards!

Myth 5) A biodiesel exhaust smells real bad. Well, this one s up to you, personally I love the smell of biodiesel. Once you realise the benefits to the environment you re sure to start loving the odour too!

Myth 6) Biodiesel is an experimental fuel without proper testing. It is in fact one of the most thoroughly tested alternative fuels on the market. Tests have shown that it can perform in a similar fashion to gasoline while of course helping the environment in a way that regular diesel certainly does not.

Myth 7) Biodiesel just doesn t last very long. In actual fact it s no different than regular diesel. Petrol companies recommend that it isn t stored past 6 months and this is standard across the board so its shelf life isn t any worse than petroleum diesel.

I hope that clears up some of the myths and rumours for you. It s time to take control of our futures and move towards a greener (and cheaper) lifestyle.
